LIAM 1973

About Me.

Liam was born in Dublin, and named William Patrick Hinch after his Dad,

But was never referred to as William, he was called Liam. He went to school there, until he reached the age of 13 years, and 6 months

At which time Liam left school and started work right away, he went through various types of employment (messenger boy, dairy help, labourer, factory worker) he loved music and started learning the guitar at 18 and at the age of 21 he married Helen, in July 1967.

Then as there was no more suitable work available in Dublin.

He and his wife immigrated to Coventry, England where his older brother Freddy lived and where work was plentiful at that time, with the help of Freddy and his wife Margaret, Liam and his wife Helen lived and worked very happily there and brought up their family over the next 40 odd years

When he was 14, Liam had his first introduction to the guitar, he recall's "it was amazing when I saw it, there was something special about how I felt I just loved the shape and sound of it", the Guitar belonged to a friend of Liam’s, and lived a few blocks away in Dublin. His friend let him hold it and touch the strings but nobody could play it at that time, Liam was hooked

After that, he found a music shop in town which sold all sorts of musical instruments;

This was to be his favourite shop from then on.

There was a guitar in the shop Liam just had to have and the asking price was 2 pound 17 shillings and 6 pence, so Liam had a word with the owner of the shop about paying weekly for the guitar, they agreed that he would pay a half crown each week - (that’s 12 and a half pence in today’s sterling) - but was told he couldn’t have the guitar until it was fully paid up,

At that time his wage was less than 2 pound (punts Irish) sterling per week,

He was a 14 year old dairy boy and it was 1960.

However, when Liam had paid off around half the price of the Guitar, he lost his job and couldn’t continue paying for it.

At first he thought of spending the money he had paid so far on something like, a mouth organ and whistle or things like that, however it so happened that his, mother and grandmother were going to town at that particular time and went with him to the music shop in order to help sort out what to do.

After speaking with the shop owner, Liam's mother and grandmother decided they would pay the remaining money so that Liam could have the Guitar. This was a surprise to Liam and was one of the happiest days of his life, at last he had his very own guitar, and he felt on top of the world.

The next challenge for him was to figure out how to play the thing, and because he didn't know anybody who could give him lessons, he decided he would have to figure it out for himself so for the next two years he bashed the strings and broke some,

By the time Liam was 17, that guitar was wrecked. Three years had passed and still he had no clue how to play a single chord. By now he had a better job earning more money, he still had the guitar bug so he bought another, this one cost a whole Weeks wages, which at the time was 5 pounds.

Liam carried on playing around with it until he was 18 years old, not even knowing how to tune it.

That was when his cousin Christy Boland introduced him to a friend of his, by the name Paddy Turner,

Paddy could play the guitar and sing and had been with one or two different bands around Dublin. Paddy took the guitar, tuned it, and then started playing chords and singing: Liam and Christy were amazed and so pleased to hear the guitar being played the way they always dreamed.

Paddy taught Liam and his cousin Christy, firstly, how to tune the guitar then showed them how to play chords C. F. and G. a week later he showed Liam how to play A-minor and some 7th chords, he also filled him in on how the fret board operated with different chord shapes, bar chords and so on.

And that was how Liam started playing the guitar in 1964 at the age of 18, but he was so focused on the instrument for the 4 years previous that he learned to tune it and within a week, was strumming and changing chords.

It wasn’t too long after this, that he was playing accompaniment to his Dad singing at the Local pub, his dad loved singing and was very pleased with the way Liam was learning the guitar.

Later his dad bought him his first electric guitar and 12 watt amp; Liam was delighted but fiddled about with the amp trying to get more loudness out of it, but after one or two electric shocks he decided it was mission impossible and too dangerous!

When Liam was age 20, with the help of his cousin Christy Boland,

he got his first gig at a new pub in Finglas, Dublin, called The Cappagh House, after he done his spot that night back in 1966, Liam recalls "the gig went well but afterwards there was pandemonium with tables and chairs flying through the air". Liam was happy to learn later, that nobody was seriously hurt, and better still he was rebooked for to play the following week, this gave Liam the confidence to go on playing the guitar and singing.

That was his introduction to gigging. Nowadays Liam is retired from Gigging and spends his time with his wife Helen and home recording, composing songs and as he would say "music the way I like it"

1967 The Bottom of the Hill

This was Liam's wedding day, that's him with the bow tie and guitar. The person on the far right with his arm outstretched is Liam's Dad, singing one of his Western songs, and the lady in between looking at his dad, is Liam's Mum.

2013 Fun at the SHAMROCK

This was a visit to Dublin, and for Liam it was fun all the way. They also took a trip to the Cork Jazz Festival that year
